On November 18th, according to the Financial Times, Brussels called on the EU to impose EU wide processing fees on small packages ordered online through platforms such as Shein, Temu, and Alibaba starting from early 2026. Last year, over 80% of the 4.6 billion packages purchased by European consumers came from Chinese sellers.The European Commission urges EU finance ministers to agree to accelerate the implementation of relevant measures to protect domestic retailers from unfair competition. The European Commission has requested to advance the implementation deadline to the first quarter of 2026. The European Commission proposed in May to remove the 150 euro threshold for goods to pay tariffs, which will take effect in mid-2028, and instead charge a fee of 2 euros per package.
